Categories helps organize your icons on your iPhone or iPod Touch into categories. This is yet another huge reason to jailbreak your iPhone. Instead of scrolling through pages of apps you can have one icon for games and then all your games show under one menu. You can pick the icon that represents your category or you can SSH some of your own icons in if you want. Just add them to /private/var/stash/Applications/Categories.app/icons.
To follow this tutorial you must be on the iPhone firmware 2.0 or higher. You also need to have a jailbroken iPhone. Instructions can be found to jailbreak your iPhone here: 2G Windows and 3G Windows.
Install Categories Via Cydia
Launch Cydia > Select “Sections” at haptic menu > Select “System” category > and select “Categories” or you can tap “Search” in Cydia and type “Categories” > Select “install” button at the right top and confirm it to install.
How To Use Categories
Another sweet thing with the new Categories is you can change the name of the category or the icon. Just tap edit and then the category and you’ll get the option. I also noticed you can have app names with spaces. I don’t think you could before. I did have my iPhone respring in the middle of setting up categories but it didn’t lose any of my settings.
Step 1: Enter the name for the Category/Folder you would like to create and press the Add button.
Step 2: For example lets created a folder called Games. You will be asked to select an icon for the folder/category you just created.
Step 3: Notice your newly created folder appears in the list now! Press to select it. You now are taken to the Edit menu where you can edit the applications that appear in the Category. Since we have not added any applications to the folder it is blank. Press the Add button at the top right of the screen. You will be shown a list of the applications on your iPhone. Press to select the ones you would like added to the Category then press the Edit button at the top left of the screen.
Step 4: You will be returned to the Edit menu where you can now order and remove applications from the Category. Press the button at the top left to return to the Categories List. Notice it now shows how many applications we have in our folder.
Step 5: Press the Home button. Notice that we now have a new icon for our newly created Category. Also notice that applications we moved into this category are not visible on the Springboard. Press to select the icon for your newly created Category. You will now be shown a list of your applications in the selected Category. Press to launch one!
