Storm Keyboard (Blackberry Storm) For WinterBoard

This instruction will change your original keyboard into Storm Keyboard (BlackBerry Storm Keyboard) only. However, if you would like to custom your whole theme, you can check out my post on how to turn you iPhone into BlackBerry Storm using PerfectStorm.

Your iPhone should be unlocked/jailbroken in order to use WinterBoard. Winterboard on iPhone (like its predecessor Summerboard for iPhone 1.1.4) is an iPhone theme manager that allows you to change any WinterBoard/SummerBoard theme on iPhone. See instruction on how to install WinterBoard via Cydia.

Install Storm Keyboard Via Cydia

Launch Cydia > Select “sections” at haptic menu > Select “Themes (Keyboard)” category > and select “Storm Keyboard” or you can tap “Search” in Cydia and type “Storm Keyboard” > Select “install” button at the right top and confirm it to install.

Activate Perfect Storm Theme via WinterBoard

Your theme still in the “unactive” condition. To activate it, just launch Winterboard and select “Storm Keyboard”. Your WinterBoard will verify with mark symbol. Press "Home" button and you’ll then bring back to the locked screen. Unlock it and you’ll see a fresh new look of your iPhone.

Kindle: Ebook Reader For iPhone

Kindle 2 from Amazon is really a cool device. You should check out here for those who never heard of Kindle. Anyhow, the updated version of Kindle is sleek and contemporary wireless reading device that allows you purchase and read digital book from Amazon.

Probably the price tag (US$359) may scare you away from purchasing Kindle, but Amazon released an iPhone app - Kindle for iPhone that lets you turn iPhone into a Kindle-like device (kind-of). Most importantly, the app is free to download. You can pick one by using iTunes link here.

Registration

For the very first time you launch Kindle app, you’ll first go through a simple registration process. You can register easily if you already have an Amazon account. Or you just follow the procedures to apply one.

Once the registration is done. Don’t expect the Kindle app will load a collection of digital books for you to read. Unlike other ebook application such as Stanza, the Kindle app does not offer free book. Amazon are selling over Kindle-formatted books for iPhone at an average price of US$9.99. But, don’t stop here. For you to try out the application and the Kindle books, Amazon offers sample chapter for most books. So, you can try before any purchase.

Unexpectedly, Kindle app does not allow you to purchase and download books within the app. Tapping the “Get Books” button will just bring to a “How To Get Books” page. You’ll then need to tap on the “Safari” link that brings you to Kindle Store via Safari browser. The web interface of Kindle Store is not optimized for iPhone, so you may take some time to pick your book. Anyways, I’ve selected a sample chapter of “Outlier”. Once you select a book, go back to Kindle app. It will then sync with your Amazon account and download the book you have just selected.

How To Use

Simply tap a book title to start reading. To navigate through pages, just flick through by using your finger. If you’d like to optimize your reading experience, tap on the page and Kindle will show you options for customization. You can alter font size, bookmark a page or go to the table of content. Kindle app also lets you use a scrollbar to navigate through pages (to be exact, it’s called location) quickly.

Before leaving the app, Kindle will memorize the latest page you’ve read. So, the next time you start to read the book again, you’ll start from where you left. Amazon also introduces a service called “WhisperSync” to keep your reading experience in sync between iPhone and Kindle (if you have one). Say, you leave off at page 33 of the book when reading on iPhone. The next time you start reading the same book on Kindle device, you’ll also start from page 33. Amazon automatically syncs the reading location in background using Whispersync. This feature is pretty good, but only for Kindle device owner.

I’ve used other ebook readers such as Stanza and eBook Reader on iPhone before. In terms of features, Kindle for iPhone is not very outstanding. It’s just well enough to turn your iPhone into an eBook reader. But if Amazon want to attract iPhone users to buy Kindle book, it should focus on improving the shopping experience from within the Kindle app. Anyhow, Kindle app is worth to download if you want to buy Kindle book from Amazon.

King's Button: The World’s Most Expensive iPhone

You can change your iPhone Home Button to a diamond button. Australian jeweler Peter Aloisson has designed the most expensive iPhone in the world that is selling at EUR1,790.000 (~ USD 2.5 million). Why is it so pricey? It’s decorated with diamonds. And, the most prominent feature is its Home Button that carries a rare 6.6 carat diamond:

Made of solid 18 carat yellow gold, white gold and rose gold. A fabulous combination. The white gold line is encrusted with a total of 138 brilliant cut diamonds of the best quality. But the main feature of this one-of-a-kind phone is it’s “home button”. It carries a rare 6.6 carat diamond. Integrated in the design as if this diamond has been made for “taking you home” .

This iPhone is just not for me. Of course, I do not have such spare money. Even I got such piles of cash, I still can’t think of any reason to buy this iPhone.

Landscape Keyboard, MMS, Improved Stock App For iPhone OS 3.0

Here comes to the last series of iPhone 3.0 coverage. Today, we will go through the rest of great features including Landscape Keyboard, MMS, improved stocks application and text application. And thanks for folks at Engadget, they have created a video that walkthrough all new features in iPhone 3.0 using the iPhone 3.0 beta firmware. To view all new features that will come with iPhone 3.0, check out iPhone OS 3.0 Features.

Multimedia Messaging

I’m not a frequent user of MMS. The feature is definitely not at the top of my iPhone feature wish list. But there are lots of users aspiring to send multimedia message on iPhone. The improved text application on iPhone 3.0 will let you send photos, audio or vcard to your friends, family or co-workers.

Landscape Keyboard

Why can’t I use landscape keyboard for Mail and Notes application? You may probably raise this kind of questions and find it annoying when some iPhone apps do not allow you to type in landscape orientation. From iPhone 3.0 and onwards, all iPhone apps can work with both Portrait and Landscape orientation. The next version of Mail, Notes and text applications will come with the landscape keyboard.

Stocks Application

The Stocks application also gets an update on iPhone 3.0. You can read related news of the companies you keep track with. And, by rotating the iPhone to landscape orientation, Stocks application will show you an enlarged chart for the stock price. Not a big change. But as a frequent user of Stocks app, this already makes a great difference.

Text Application

The Text application will allow you to delete individual text message.

Note Syncing

Finally, iTunes will support note syncing. With iPhone 3.0, you can sync the note using iTunes.

Cut, Copy & Paste For iPhone 3.0

With the new iPhone OS 3.0 features, Apple finally announced cut, copy and paste, which is the most wanted features on iPhone. Cut, copy and paste looks pretty easy using finger.

Let’s use Mail application as example. To copy, simply double-tap on any word or block of text. iPhone will then highlight the word or paragraph for you to copy. Tap the copy button to save the selection into clipboard. To paste the text, double-tap again and iPhone will let you paste back the text. You can use the same way to copy & paste text in Notes application. Thats cool and simple way to use it.

The amazing things is that you will be able to do copy & paste in Safari. Just tap and hold onto the paragraph of text you want to copy. iPhone will intelligently highlight the paragraph to copy. So, you want to select two paragraphs? Simple drag the dot down and select another paragraph. When it’s done, tap Copy button to copy the text. Copy & paste works across applications. So, you may switch back to Mail or Notes application and paste the text.

The coolest way ever is you can undo paste. Shake your iPhone and it will pop up a menu to let you undo paste. Not just you are allowed to copy & paste text, iPhone 3.0 also lets you copy & paste photos. You can select & copy multiple photos and send them via email.

You can check out the iPhone 3.0 Preview presentation below about copy and paste application. If you like to download iPhone OS 3.0 Beta firmware, you can download via bitorrent link here.

How To Create Rotating Wallpaper (WinterBoard)

Thanks for the great design of Winterboard. If you have basic Javascript / HTML knowledge, you can easily create your own Winterboard theme. Here there is Winterboard called “Rotating Wallpaper”, that allows you to select a total of six photos that will be rotated in every 15 seconds. The theme is quite primitive and more features (like fading effect) will be added later. In order to use rotating wallpaper your iPhone must be jailbreak first. You can check out on how to unlock and jailbreak iPhone 2G here.

Install Rotating Wallpaper Via Disk Aid

The theme is freely for download and you can install it via DiskAid. Download theme here and and follow the procedures mentioned in "How To Install WinterBoard Theme Using Disk Aid"

Custom With Your Own Photos

You’re free to replace the default photos with your own for the rotating wallpapers. After you decompress the theme package, go to the “Private” folder. All wallpaper images can be found there. Just copy your own photos and replace them. But make sure you should have the correct filename and the image should be best with width of 320 pixels and length not shorter than 460 pixels.

After replacement, you can just copy the “Rotating Wallpaper” folder to “/Library/Themes” folder on iPhone. Then launch Winterboard and select the “Rotating Wallpaper”, followed by clicking Home button to activate it.

iPhone 3.0 is Jailbreakable

As you may already know, iPhone 3.0 offers over 100 new features including copy & paste, MMS, voice recording, etc. This update is huge and you’ll definitely want to upgrade your iPhone once it’s released this summer. See iPhone OS 3.o features here.

iPhone Dev-Team confirmed that iPhone 3.0 Beta can be jailbreakable for both iPhone 2G & 3G. It’s incredible how iPhone Dev Team does that in so short period of time. But one thing the team stressed is that, DO NOT UPGRADE TO iPhone 3.0 directly for iPhone 3G when it is released. This will upgrade the baseband that your iPhone can no longer be unlocked using yellowsn0w:

And for those wondering, yes the 3.0 OS is jailbreakable on all devices. It’s just those using 3G yellowsn0w that have to show some restraint and wait for PwnageTool to create a custom IPSW that avoids the baseband update.

For those who are new to iPhone 3.0, it is the next version of iPhone firmware. Presently, it’s still in beta and available for iPhone developers. Apple is target to release it publicly this summer.

iPhone OS 3.0 Features

Couple days ago, Apple has announced iPhone OS 3.0 Beta in a media event. More than 100 new features are developed for this next generation mobile OS. I’m excited about this announcement and it really exceeds my expectation. Let’s jump and see what features will come with iPhone 3.0.

Here there is the big features:

Landscape Keyboard for all applications - Apple listened to us. Landscape keyboard is now available for all iPhone apps including SMS, Notes and Mail apps.

MMS - Personally, I’m not a big fan for MMS. But this is still a big feature. You can send multimedia message via iPhone. The message can include images, voice memo and vcard. But as Apple mentioned, this feature will only come to iPhone 3G.

Spotlight Searching - iPhone 3.0 offers a system wide search and it’s built right into the home screen. The spotlight search can search anything on iPhone including email, contacts, calendar, note, etc.

Copy & Paste Photos - Not just copy & paste text, you can now copy & paste photos. Say, you can select multiple photos, copy them to email and send it out.

Cut, Copy & Paste Text - The most requested feature is finally here. iPhone 3.0 lets you do “Cut, Copy & Paste” system wide, across any applications. You can copy text in email, note, etc. And, you can even copy & paste text in Safari.

Peer-to-Peer Connectivity - Allow two iPhones to discover each other and connect directly over bluetooth. Remember this is not an application but Apple has built this ability into iPhone and lets developers to build on that. By using this feature, iPhone apps can send files over bluetooth or share game data (multi-player games) between iPhones.

Sync Note with iTunes - Finally, you can sync note using iTunes.

Bluetooth A2DP support - With iPhone 3.0, you can listen to stereo music wirelessly by pairing it with A2DP headphones or speakers. This is also available for iPhone 3G only.

Voice Memo App - A new voice memo application will come with iPhone 3.0. This app allows you to record audio and you can send the voice memo via email.

Push Notification - Well, finally iPhone apps can be notified in background. Say, for an Instant messaging application, you will not be notified once you quit the IM app. But with Push Notification on iPhone 3.0, the IM app can push an alert in form of audio, text message or badge to your iPhone in background.

A modified version of Stock App - On top of stock price, you can read news related to a particular stock.

Turn-by-turn Direction - Apple has opened up the opportunity for iPhone developers to build turn-by-turn applications on iPhone.

3G tethering - Use iPhone 3G as a modem and share the Internet connection with your laptop or computers. But Apple mentioned this feature will depend on carrier and may not be available to everyone.

I know you love all the new features and wanna upgrade your iPhone now. However, you’ll need to be patient. iPhone 3.0 is still in beta and will not be available to public until this summer.
